I need to do an essay on contemporary artists. Is he a contemporary artist? because he was producing art in the contemporary period

Well, he’s dead, so strictly speaking he’s not contemporary, because he’s not working right now.

However, the word is also used by professionals to describe art produced since World War II, so I think you’re in the clear.

0 Life Line by Logan Hicks New Print Release and Artist ProfileWe’re very excited to share our latest project with you all; “Life Line” by Brooklyn Based Stencil Master, Logan Hicks. (www.workhorsevisuals.com)

This print will be available at www.jetsetgraffiti.com on June 9th, 2010. Release is at 12PM PST, 3PM EST, 8PM GMT

Known around the world as one of the hardest working artists alive, Logan is among the most talented contemporary artists today. His vision is exacting, and his standards are extremely high. After months of discussions, we decided to use a special Liquid Graphite Pigment with Silver Flake to provide the solid slate-like feel that Logan wanted in this print while maintaining a sense of depth and variation that is so important to his artwork. The results are striking. As a special variation for the collectors, we also printed 15 with Gold Metallic inks.

I have studied many of the great portraitists of the past such as Gainsborough. I would like to know which contemporary oil painters are considered the best today ? Also do portrait artists today use only oil or are charcoal, pencils, and pastels used ?

There are a LOT of greats out there – depending on which artist you ask you will probably get completely different answers based on who they are acquainted with and what their background is.

A nice long list of names is available through the New York agency Portraits, Inc. and they represent truly superior talents, so you might check out their web site. www.portraitsinc.com

You may also contact a few well-known galleries that can connect you with good prospects, including the Forum Gallery and Hirschl & Adler, both in New York.

You can get portraits in any medium – some artists have favorites or specialties.

At this level, be prepared to throw down some serious bank, but it is really worth it.

it’s really a matter of personal choice, what kind of art do you like and appreciate. all so by contemporary you mean of this time right? or contemporary as in "modern" art? either way you should check out Tracy Emin, she’s rather well known and quite popular at the moment. hope i helped.

0 Secret Recording of an Elusive Art Master: Richard GrassiContemporary art does not have to be ugly or incomprehensible! And saying a piece of art is gorgeous does not indicate that it (or you) are vapid. Visit http://www.richardgrassi.com/ and you will see beautiful art that is neither trite nor depressing.

I need to be upfront. I’m a researcher & writer, not a visual artist; and I use words to talk, not paint. However, as all my friends know, I’m also a crazy art geek. I love hanging around galleries, shows, and museums almost as much as bookstores and libraries. There’s something mesmerizing and exhilarating about seeing paintings and drawings that I don’t often experience when reading novels. Perhaps great art stirs up powerful, archetypal memories in me hearkening back to the days of our distant past… to the magic of cave paintings… Who knows? (In my next life I wanna be an artist!)

Anyway, one of my favorite contemporary artists is Richard Grassi. I’ve followed his career for a while and I own several of his pieces. Now when I came across a quirky voice recording of him musing over Beauty, Joy and Kindness, I decided that it’d be fun to illustrate it with some images of his artwork. And this video is the result. I think it turned out all right, so I want to share it with you. Hope you like it. icon smile Secret Recording of an Elusive Art Master: Richard Grassi But do check out that link above, I think you’ll be glad you did.

Cheers,
Janice Steen

P.S. Oh, and here’s an interesting excerpt from one of his books that elaborates upon some of the things he said in the video: “I do not try to foist my own personal catharsis upon the viewers, nor do I moralize or editorialize by depicting war, atrocity, iniquity, victimization and other miserable facts of life. For although I acknowledge the popularity of those subjects, especially in art academia, I believe that the mass media currently provides a far more effective means of disseminating such information than does fine art. Moreover, looking too often at those images leaves me feeling depressed and/or angry because they engender bleak thoughts and a sense of hopelessness. And that is certainly not what I want my artwork to do. Rather, I wish to convey a spirit of optimism in my pictures by focusing on the beauty and dignity I see in the faces around me and on the magnificence and mystery I observe in the places I visit.” — (Richard Grassi, Sketches of the Cotswolds)

0 Photography in Context: The Projected Photograph | Parsons The New School for DesignPhotography in Context: The Projected Photograph
PARSONS THE NEW SCHOOL FOR DESIGN | http://www.newschool.edu/parsons

The Aperture Foundation, the Photography Department at Parsons The New School for Design, and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics present a new season of panel discussions focusing on photography. Speakers including George Baker, Associate Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art and Vice-Chair of UCLA, Department of Art History; Andrea Geyer, artist and Assistant Professor of Fine Art, Parsons The New School for Design; and artists Paul Pfeiffer and Krzysztof Wodiczko, discuss projection and installation strategies many contemporary artists have used to create immersive and cinema-like experiences in their works and exhibitions.

PARSONS PHOTOGRAPHY | http://www.newschool.edu/parsons/bfa-photography/

Contemporary artists have started departing from the large, tableau vivant treatments of the photograph, as seen in works by Jeff Wall, Andreas Gursky, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, and Gregory Crewdson. In recent years, they have employed a variety of projection devices to incorporate their photographs into temporal, audio-visual experiences, which recall cinematic contexts yet retain distinctly photographic qualities. On the surface, these works seem to meld experimental and structuralist filmmaking lineages and large-scale photographic practices prevalent in the past two decades. At the same time, the new practitioners of the projected photograph are expanding the definition of photography itself.

The lecture series is presented with generous support from the Kettering Family Foundation and the Henry Nias Foundation. The program is made possible in part by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
