I mean I never see Medieval pics of blacks in the history books. I have found out however that there are Medieval frescoes painted by black people in places like the Sudan and Ethiopia that depict our people. Here is some

This is a picture of a beautiful black Princess and her husband

Mary and Jesus are portrayed as white as the Nubians painted all their religious figures as whites.

This is a pic of a black Queen Mother named Martha.

This is a pic of a black princess praying to Mary

Behind her are the three magi shown as black men and next to Mary are two black male dancers

These paintings are contemporary works of art that are in the Sudan’s national Museum.

Have you ever seen pics like this before in the medieval times of black people and what do feel about these pics.

Wow…you’ve taught me something new today. I’ve never seen paintings like those.

It’s a man, still living, and he paints mainly mothers and children, I think but I could be wrong about that. All his paintings are set against a very dark background with the figures kind of emerging from it. He’s Polish or maybe Swedish or Norwegian -from that area of Europe anyway. It’s driving me mad trying to think of his name. Can anyone think who it might be?

Even though mothers and children are not his main subject I wonder if you’re thinking of Odd Nerdrum?

I know that art is a matter of taste. How are the prices set for paintings by contemporary artists that is little more than a colorful mess on a canvas (to my untrained eye, anyway).

I just don’t get it – prices can be in the tens of thousands for something that just doesn’t seem to justify the sale price.

(I don’t know much about art, admittedly…so please enlighten me)

The value of the art was in the composition, and the expression; the painterly value; the visual beauty of the colors and how they compliment one another, the geometry, etc. Basically: set aside the idea that a painting needs to illustrate something and ask yourself "is it pleasing to look at?" and maybe "what is the artist trying to illustrate in abstract terms?" Yes, I think a lot of "artists" will just slap some paint on a medium, call it art, and sell it as the same because they can, and classical training or some profound claim as to what is being portrayed is really what is being sold. Like that guy who covers a hotel room with cheese — it’s not profound, it’s not art. It’s just stupid. But as long as someone is willing to pay for it, then it’s an art of some kind — and maybe the artist is a con artist.

This semester for my painting brief I have decided to paint portraits that have an abstract background. I was wondering if there is any paintings in contemporary times, like Lisa L Cyr who paint figurative as well as abstracted. Basically abstract backgrounds and painterly portraits ontop with ornamental and decorative elements.

I found this web page on wiki:

I hope it helps!

Loving greetings.

I’m wierd. I know. Any contemporary paintings anyone would care to offer their explanation of that might spark a new interest for me? I love meaning in art.

The Abend Art Gallery in Denver has Awesome artist named Zoe Ace, she is great. Totally contemporary. Whimsical, Flippant art that jogs your mind. She has many works, all different, but you can tell it’s her work when they are separate, too!

what are the subjects that help contemporary art to sell successfully these days?
For example, I could paint a beautiful picture of a horse, but there are probably lots of people doing this already and its not neccessarlily catching the buyers imagination. How do you get inspiration for original work?

I get all my inspiration form the one and only Tony Hart. I’ve displayed and sold several painting created by filling empty washing up bottles with poster paint and suspending them from a piece of string and swirling it round and round on a large canvas. I then get a small Plasticine character to walk over it and generally mess it up. Everyone a masterpiece. I also get people to send in the their best paintings, (which I’m unable to send back) and palm them off with £2.99 box of gouache from Woolies. I then sell the best ones as my own work and watch the money roll in. Happy painting. If you are keen on the horse try chopping it in half
